Will the Yahoo work-from-home policy change influence other CEOs

Marissa Meyer, Yahoo’s CEO, has decided that employees are to work in the Yahoo offices as opposed to working from home. Meyer has stated that communication and collaboration are imperative in a workplace and has put a policy in affect that ensures employees will work in office, only, starting in June.

Employees who have been working at home are now required to make the decision: work in the office or leave the job. This change is based on the belief that employees are more productive when they are physically present at the workplace. Meyer also believes that team cohesiveness is more guaranteed when everyone is in close proximity to one another. There have been mixed reviews on this decision. Some in the IT community have said that it is a way to ensure that only truly dedicated employees will stay on board. Others believe that this is going to limit access to available talent (employees who work from home).

Yahoo’s work-from-home policy may influence other companies to enact similar policies. Companies who have been struggling to make a profit might consider enacting a similar policy in order to bring a different feel to the company. A physical closeness might breed, in these cases, better work output. For other companies who have been hiring telecommuters, they may have absolutely no need to change their policies. It works for them. Yahoo has stated that this decision is not meant to send the message that all companies should follow in the same footsteps. Mayer has decided that it is what is right for Yahoo, a company that isn’t currently the most profitable or the most sought after.

Some companies have taken into consideration the different temperaments of their employees. Bloomberg Businessweek has stated, “Surveys repeatedly show that companies with¬†flexible working arrangements are more efficient¬†than those without them.” Many companies have taken this ideology as their own because they find many introverted employees prefer to work out of their homes. Introverts tend to gain energy in quiet spaces where they can be alone. Extroverts, on the other hand, may become distracted while working at home because of their need for constant stimuli. These are the employees that thrive at work due to the activity that distracts introverted employees.

Daily dose on discussed Inkhouse, a media marketing firm, where employees have the option to work from home on Fridays. One employee stated employees will feel “chained to their desks” if they are not given the opportunity to work from home as well as work in office. Inkhouse started off as a work from home company but realized, over time, that they were missing out on the team feeling that arises out of physically working with their team members. Employees may actually be more productive if they are permitted to have flexibility in their work. Often, employees find themselves frustrated when being told they are not allowed this flexibility. This frustration can negatively impact productivity in the workplace. Yahoo’s new policy may influence other CEO’s who are at a similar crossroads in their business. Others may find this policy to be unnecessary to their already thriving company.
